Drifters

After the success of Plankton, FX Networks wanted to develop a sketch series from the same concept, as a weekly staple of their animated variety show Cake. Drifters continued what the short film started, but far more ambitiously.

Unusual for 3D animation, this is a show with no recurring characters (except one, for the eagle-eyed fans out there). The joy of it was introducing a new, bizarre planktonic organism each week, voiced by a new, brilliant UK comedy talent. It’s funny, sometimes dark, sometimes weird, but ultimately it’s a show about feeling small in a much bigger world.

Drifters went on to become FX’s official submission for the Primetime Emmy Awards in the Short Form Animated Program category, as well as their submission for the Annie Awards in no fewer than seven categories: Best Writing, Best Short Subject, Best Direction, Best Voice Acting, Best Character Design, Best Production Design, and Best Character Animation.
